Do small businesses need HR UK?

- In the UK, there is no legal requirement for businesses (whether small or large) to have an 'in-house' human resources (HR) department or to outsource HR to a third party. If you do not have any in-house HR expertise though (or external specialist HR support), your business will rely on you (or your staff) to oversee HR functions and tasks - which are both time consuming and exposes you to legal risks if you stray into non-compliance with the law.

What HR policies does a small business need? 

- As a minimum (even if you employ just one member of staff) every business must have a written disciplinary and grievance policy - although most businesses benefit from further HR policies. A documented health and safety policy is a further legal requirement if you employ five or more people.

Do I have to give employees a contract?

- An employer must give employees and workers a document stating the main conditions of employment when they start work. This is known as a ‘written statement of employment particulars’ and must contain certain information. Most employers choose to incorporate this information into a legally binding 'contract of employment' - and it's always best to have these written by experienced professionals.
